Product Design Lead / 2022

Networthy aims to make saving money fun while also offering better economic value than most savings accounts. With Networthy, you get the chance to win big just by saving.
Even if you don't win a cash prize in the bi-weekly draw, your money still grows instead of disappearing as it does with the lottery.

Overview

02

Problem

Need to create a working prototype and subsequently create the website in 2 months to meet the investor pitch date. Research is required on what is the best way to move forward to make this tight deadline and communicate the changes with the founders and third-party application.

Outcome

Completed the approved MVP design on Figma.
Set up the Figma design system for a single source of truth.
Shipped the website on Webflow on time - Networthy is able to secure seed funding.

Challenges

03

“Thinking about design is hard, but not thinking about it can be disastrous.” - Ralph Caplan

Address the communication gap caused by team members being in different time zones.

Address the communication gap caused by team members being in different time zones.

Collaborate with a third-party developer to create MVP to ensure consistent branding and styling.

The lack of a single source of truth is one of the big problems that needed to be tackled to meet any deadline.

Design Principles

04

How might we convince the user to sign-up and learn more about Networthy?

1. Understand that the demographic is wide and keep the design simple, modern, and familiar. Use reusable patterns, readable fonts, and accessible contrasts, and avoid text-heavy pages.

2. Applying Gestalt’s Theory of Proximity - spacing of carefully curated information becomes essential to not make the user think!

3. Make sure to use images and whitespace to complement the text and provide context where necessary.

Solution

05

Overcoming the problem.

1. Created a design system on Figma to ensure a consistent platform throughout the app and the website.

2. To communicate better with the founders mocked up the website on Figma, allowing faster asynchronous approvals/edits.

3. With the lack of a dedicated website developer on the team, ended up using Webflow to create the final approved design from Figma. Coding the entire website from scratch in less than 2 weeks would be unrealistic, especially in making quick changes to cater to the final pitch.

Key Research

06

Some key insights that helped boost Networthy's content.

1. Over 50% of Canadians are less than $200 away from not being able to meet their monthly debt obligations. This leaves almost half the country in a financially vulnerable position.

2. Canadians spend around $10 billion on lottery tickets each year, or $970 per household on average.

3. The Big Six banks hold ~94% of all deposits in Canada.

Reflection

07

Things learnt and next steps.

I realized that while we kept the final user in mind, the main use case of this website, for now, is for pitching and raising seed money. In the future, I would like to be able to do usability tests on the website (something that I learned at Geotab) and be able to have more analytics.
The key takeaways are to be able to able navigate through different technologies (had no prior experience with Webflow but backed me and my research, designing for the right user is extremely important (the investors in this case), incorporating feedback to continuously iterate and innovate, and lastly keep using my developer knowledge to
create scalable products.
